The Day of the Seafarer 2026, observed worldwide on 25 June, was commemorated during an official ceremony held this morning at Trevessa House, Mer Rouge. The event was organised by the Seafarers’ Welfare Fund (SWF) under the international theme, “Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks.”, highlighting the indispensable role seafarers play in sustaining global trade while facing demanding and often hazardous working conditions.
The ceremony brought together key stakeholders from the maritime sector and Government. Among the dignitaries present were the Junior Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Mr Gilles Fabrice David; the Lord Mayor of Port Louis, Ms Christelle Pondard; and the Chairman of the Seafarers’ Welfare Fund, Mr Jaques Patrick Bouquet. Their presence underscored the Government’s continued commitment to recognising and supporting the welfare of Mauritian seafarers.
In his address, Junior Minister David paid tribute to the dedication and resilience of Mauritian seafarers, acknowledging their significant contribution to international shipping, the national maritime sector, and the global economy. He noted that of the 201 registered Mauritian seafarers, 44 are currently active, while 157 retired seafarers benefit from a Government initiative that provides a monthly income support of Rs 2,500. This measure reflects the Government’s appreciation of their years of dedicated service and their contribution to the country’s economic development.
The ceremony also served as an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of safeguarding the well-being, rights, and social protection of seafarers, whose work ensures the uninterrupted movement of goods across the world. Participants highlighted the need to continue promoting safer working conditions and enhancing support mechanisms for both active and retired seafarers.
The annual observance of the Day of the Seafarer reinforces Mauritius’ commitment to recognising the invaluable role of seafarers and supporting initiatives that strengthen the country’s maritime community while contributing to a resilient and sustainable blue economy.
