World Maritime Day 2025

The Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Robert Hungley, urged for collective action to protect oceans and promote a sustainable blue economy during a ceremony held at the Seafarers’ Welfare Fund (SWF) headquarters in Mer Rouge to mark World Maritime Day 2025.

Mr Hungley highlighted the ocean’s vital role in supporting life and livelihoods, while warning against overexploitation, pollution, and climate change. He also paid tribute to seafarers for their dedication and called for greater efforts to attract young people to maritime careers.

The event was attended by Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell; Junior Minister, Mr Fabrice David; and SWF Chairman, Mr J. Patrick Bouquet.

Dr Boolell reaffirmed Mauritius’s commitment to a sustainable ocean economy and to safeguarding seafarers’ rights under the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006. He also cautioned against drug abuse and smuggling risks within the maritime sector.

Junior Minister David announced the upcoming Assises de l’Océan (07–18 October 2025), focusing on sustainable ports, green shipping, marine energy, and blue tourism.

Mr Bouquet emphasised this year’s theme, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity,” and reaffirmed the SWF’s dedication to seafarers’ welfare through financial aid, healthcare, training, and advocacy.

As part of the celebration, cash gifts were distributed to registered seafarers under the 2024 End-of-Year package and 2025 Seafarers’ Day initiative.
